How To Get Your LegitScript Healthcare Merchant Certification

A healthcare provider treating a patient.

LegitScript’s Healthcare Merchant Certification lets the world know your business is operating safely and legally. To help prepare you, we’ve compiled these step-by-step instructions so that you’ll have everything you need when you’re ready to apply.

LegitScript’s Healthcare Merchant Certification Gives Your Patients Confidence

In 2008, LegitScript’s Healthcare Merchant Certification was the first of its kind to be recognized by The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. Over more than a decade, we became known for our thorough application process designed to vet pharmacies, telemedicine providers, telehealth providers, other healthcare providers, and supply chain businesses including pharmaceutical manufacturers, wholesalers, and distributors.

Certification helps gain patients’ trust, improve compliance with regulatory authorities, and unlock opportunities to participate in online advertising. LegitScript is one of the only certifying bodies recognized by Google, Bing, Meta, TikTok, Visa, and Mastercard to vet the advertising of healthcare providers.

Ensure You Have the Proper Documentation Before You Apply

It’s important to understand what the Healthcare Merchant Certification application process will look like — and we’re here to help. There are 11 standards, or steps, that you’ll need to pass to become certified.

The 11 standards for certification are as follows.

Registration and Compliance

We first make sure you are who you say you are and that you have the necessary documentation. This includes paperwork such as:

  • Licensure or Registration
  • Legal Compliance
  • Domain Name Registration
  • Applicant Location
  • Internal Practices

We then check to see that your affiliates and staff have the required qualifications. This includes disclosure of:

  • Prior Discipline
  • Affiliates
  • External Practices

Finally, we make sure your patient services or treatment practices are in compliance with applicable laws. This includes questions around:

  • Patient Services

Steps to Get Your LegitScript Healthcare Merchant Certification

LegitScript’s certification experts offer this advice to move your application along through the review process more quickly:

1. Start as soon as possible.

Begin and complete the application as soon as you are able. Applications are reviewed in the order they have been received (except for those with the expedited service).

2. Have your documents and information ready.

Having all documents will help you complete the questionnaire quickly. Your questionnaire must be completed before the review begins.

TIP: Expedited processing can be added during this step in the process.

3. Be thorough.

It is important to be thorough and transparent. This will avoid back-and-forth conversations between you and LegitScript’s review analysts.

TIP: The most commonly forgotten documents include the Compounding addendum, Healthcare Licensure S/S, and the Healthcare Telemedicine sheet. We are also unable to complete our review until all websites you're applying to certify feature a HIPAA-compliant and publicly accessible privacy policy. For your reference, you may wish to review the Department of Health and Human Services' Model Notices of Privacy Practices. Finally, expedited processing can also be added during this step of the application process.

4. Respond promptly.

If analysts need additional information or request remediation, respond promptly. We are unable to advance your application until all information is provided and necessary changes are made.

After Submitting Your LegitScript Healthcare Merchant Certification Application

Are you wondering what happens to your application once it’s submitted? First, it is screened for completeness by an internal team. Once the screening process is complete, your application is submitted to the analyst team to ensure providers are compliant with all local and national laws, and regulations, as well as our Terms & Conditions.
